Ariel Winthrop a marqué l’histoire du cinéma américain. Ni réalisateur, ni producteur, ni scénariste, ni même à proprement parler acteur, il fut l’un des figurants les plus emblématiques d’Hollywood. Avec plus d’une centaine d’apparitions à l’écran, croisant notamment la route de Martin Scorsese, Sidney Lumet, John Cassavetes, Woody Allen ou même Alfred Hitchcock, il a consacré sa carrière – son œuvre – à la figuration, cet art très particulier qui consistait selon lui à « se fondre dans le décor ». Après avoir réalisé son unique film, A Man Off-Season, Ariel s’est retiré de l’industrie cinématographique et on a perdu toute trace de lui.


Ariel Winthrop has left his mark on the history of American cinema. Neither director, nor producer, nor screenwriter, nor even strictly speaking an actor, he was one of the most emblematic extras in Hollywood. With more than a hundred screen appearances, crossing paths with Martin Scorsese, Sidney Lumet, John Cassavetes, Woody Allen and even Alfred Hitchcock, he devoted his career - his work - to the very special art of "blending into the background". After making his only film, A Man Off-Season, Ariel retired from the film industry and is no longer remembered.
